"Taipei, March 21 (CNA) An engineer with a South Korean company that makes cyber games was arrested Monday for allegedly breaking into the computer system of a Taiwanese competitor and stealing vital business information, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) reported. The South Korean computer engineer, surnamed Lee, was accused by Taiwan's cyber game company INSREA of penetrating the company's Internet firewall and stealing business intelligence and deleting vital corporate uplink data, CIB investigators said. Lee, who was assigned to Taipei by his South Korean company Webzen, was arrested at his Taipei County home and was handed over to the Taipei Prosecutors' Office for further questioning. According to CIB investigators, INSREA and Webzen were business partners until they had a falling out in recent months due to competition and conflicts of interest. After examining and cross-comparing computer data provided by INSREA, CIB investigators concluded that Lee was the one who hacked into INSREA's system and destroyed information after the two companies ended their partnership last August. During Monday's questioning, Lee said that INSREA was the sole agent of Webzen products in the Taiwan area. After it established its own branch office in Taipei, Webzen wanted to retrieve part of the operational business rights for some of the games in Taiwan, so he was assigned to Taipei. Lee denied the hacking accusation, claiming that for the convenience of data transfer, he was authorized by INSREA to use that company's Internet protocol (IP) and he changed some relevant information while INSREA staff looked on. But the INSREA people said, according to the CIB investigators, that Lee continued to intrude into INSREA's core systems after the companies ended the relationship last August, resulting in huge losses for INSREA. It is not cheap ($30 for the duration of a flight) nor is it very fast (satellite-based technology can't deliver the snappy response you are used to on the ground) but it is really, really nice. It's great to be able to check my email, catch up with some work, or just surf the web - airplane time used to be about napping, paperbacks or crappy movies. DNS cache poisoning bug hits Symantec

Crackers are using a security vulnerability in Symantec's enterprise products to redirect surfers to websites hosting malicious code. This hack is a DNS cache poisoning hack. It was detected by the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Centre on 4 March, it has been traced back to a vulnerability affecting Symantec firewalls with DNS caching.

Symantec has issued a patch for its Symantec Enterprise Firewall and Enterprise Security Gateway appliance products. Even users who applied a July 2004 fix to correct a previous DNS cache poisoning problem are advised to revisit the issue. A few non-Symantec users reported similar issues, so the problem is not only a problem in Symantec firewall. The SANS Institute, has issued general advice on dealing with the attack.

As a result of the attack, enterprise users visiting popular domain names such as google.com, ebay.com, and weather.com were redirected to servers hosting malware (the ABX toolbar spyware). The spyware was loaded using an ActiveX-controlled blocked by XP SP2, but other Windows shops will have to clean up client machines as well as patch enterprise systems.

Cyber pirates admit guilt

"Three men charged with distributing pirated versions of games like X-box and Playstation have pleaded guilty, bringing to a close the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) largest inquiry into computer piracy.

Dubbed the ‘Robin Hoods of Cyberspace’, the three, 26-year-old Seth Kleinberg of Los Angeles, 32-year-old Albert Bryndza of New York and 20-year-old Jeffrey Lerman of Long Island – are likely to be awarded three to five years of jail time for uploading copyrighted software for free download.

Denying monetary motives behind the act, the three said that they did it to compete with other groups that put free games on the Internet.

While Kleinberg, who was involved in the act from 1998 to 2004, cracked illegal distribution codes to facilitate copying of the discs, Lerman tweaked the software to fit into a single disc between 2002 and 2004. Bryndza, who was given the task of building servers that housed the free downloads, was involved in the act between 1999 and 2004.

The FBI inquiry, officially called ‘Operation Higher Education’, posed a challenge for the cops due to the fact that network members were using encrypted chat rooms and password-enabled servers to stay in touch with each other. Many times, these servers were situated outside the

There will be 256MB RAM—no word on what type; memory cards will range from 64MB to 1GB

There will be no “next-gen” (i.e. Blu-ray or HD-DVD) drive, but instead a dual-layer DVD

There will be an optional hard drive (as we heard
before)—no word on final size

There will be a USB 2.0 camera for 1.2-megapixel shots and VGA-quality video

5.1-channel audio is handled in software—X3DAudio to be exact (no word on in/outs)

Apparently developers are being told to shoot for hi-def screens as the lowest common denominator—720p, to be exact
(that’s 1280 x 720 at 60fps); thank god, but it was bound to happen eventually. Apparently the 360 will also play VC-1
(aka WMVHD, one of the Blu-ray codecs) files out of box, as well as MP3 and WMA. No word yet on all that
wireless biz we’ve been hearing about,

Paper-like display in two years, says Philips

"Philips Polymer Vision, has announced more progress in the area of rollable displays for the mobile-device industry. The new 5-inch PV-QML5 rollable display has a decreased radius of curvature, improved operational and mechanical lifetime and paperlike viewing contrast. These are major steps forward compared to the world's first rollable display prototype introduced by Polymer Vision in February 2004. The company says that current process and yield improvements will enable production within two years.
The Polymer Vision PV-QML5 is an ultra-thin (100µm) featherweight QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) active-matrix display with a diagonal of 5 inches. When not actively used, the display can be rolled up into a small housing with a radius of curvature of less than 7.5 mm. With four gray levels, the monochrome display provides paperlike viewing comfort with a high (10:1) contrast ratio for reading-intensive applications. Even in bright daylight, the display is easy to read. Using a bistable electrophoretic display effect from E Ink Corp., the display consumes an exceptionally low amount of power. It is thus ideally suited for mobile applications.
Rollable displays are projected to be the primary solution to the demand for larger displays in mobile devices, without increasing device size, weight, or power consumption. The company sees rollable displays being used for smooth, paperlike viewing in all sorts of data-centric mobile applications, such as text, agendas, email, electronic maps, and multiple-data information services."

"In the continuing evolution of the phisher,
the latest scams are crafting deceptive email links that include a
bank's URL, but send victims to a phishing spoof site. The phishers are
combining wildcard DNS, URL encoding and redirection services to
construct the URLs. Netcraft has examples of emails that presented barclays.co.uk in the URL but sent clicks to a spoofed page at a server in Moscow. A DNS cache poisoning
attack over the weekend also highlights the potential use of DNS tricks
in 'pharming' (phishing using redirection rather than bait
emails)."

LAND attack back

that nearly 8 years after the attack was first made public, Windows
2003 and Windows XP SP2 are in fact vulnerable to the historic LAND attack."

Granted, you need to have the firewall turned off for this work, but
there's a whole lotta machines that don't have it turned on.

This standard utilizes a mesh topology, allowing for fully self-configuring networks where each node can relay messages on behalf of others, thus increasing the range and available bandwidth with the number of nodes active within the system, versus the point-to-point structure of existing WiFi networks. This will radically transform WiFi hotspots, allowing the geographical area and available bandwidth on the network to scale with the number of participants."
